Data Privacy in 2022
According to a 2019 Pew Research Center study, 79% of U.S. adults report being concerned about the way their data is being used by companies. What is Data Privacy Week?
Data Privacy Week (January 24 – 28 of 2022) began as Data Privacy Day in the United States and Canada in January 2008 as an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe. Data Protection Day commemorates the January 28, 1981 signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection. Even though this treaty was signed over 40 years ago, data privacy is still an ideal that must be championed by individuals and organizations across the globe.
Data Privacy Week’s goal is to generate awareness about the importance of privacy, highlight easy ways to protect personal information, and remind organizations that respecting privacy is good for business. The focus is on educating organizations about the responsibility they hold for keeping individuals’ personal information safe from unauthorized access and ensuring fair, and relevant data collection and processing.
